Conceria Puccini Attilio

The Story of Conceria Puccini Attilio

The story begins in Ponte in Egola, a small town in the cradle of Tuscany where, since ancient times, vegetable tanning has developed and become known.

The name of the creator of the company Attilio Puccini, a man who decades ago firmly believed in quality, in the tradition of the ancient artisanal treatment of vegetable tanning, in respect for the environment and the naturalness of the leather, in the optimism for the future, in the will to pass on these essential values to his family and which until today, preserve and continue to pass on as a unique and precious good.

Their Traditions

The tannery is now well known in the tannery sector and especially in the production of vegetable tanned leather, for leather goods, footwear, upholstery belts.

The tannery is a founding member of the "Consortium of Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather", a small group of tanners from the tanning district between Pisa and Florence, where vegetable-tanned leather is still produced using traditional methods. The quality of vegetable tanned leather in Tuscany is the result of long experience and is closely linked to the way of life and culture of these regions. From a qualitative point of view, vegetable leather has certain characteristics such as softness and ductility, characteristics that combine with the different stylistic needs of shoe factories and leather goods manufacturers.

Their Philosophy

Precious are their skins that arrive raw from the best slaughterhouses in the Alps and Northern Europe, preserved with only coarse salt to preserve their freshness and recovered and derived exclusively from what food consumption rejects and which we rehabilitate instead. thanks to tanning which causes them to rot over time.

Our wooden barrels are precious, where the leather comes to life, where it is cared for and treated to last over time.

Precious is their water, which rinses the skin of its impurities and works with vegetable tannins to give it new life.

Precious are their tannins, powders obtained from the bark, trunk, leaves and fruits of chestnut, quebracho and mimosa plants, extracts of unique and natural qualities.

Precious are their ancient recipes of animal, vegetable and marine oils and fats that give the skin softness and elasticity, and which we keep as treasures of our experience.

Precious are their dyes which penetrate the fibers of the leather and color it with bright tones, without ever being dull or artificial and whose small differences in color only guarantee the uniqueness of the product.

Precious are their chains and their hooks to which the leathers are hung, left to dry slowly over time; their machines and their dry drums, which grind the leather making it soft and silky.

Precious are their stamps and sprays which finish the grain of the leather, color it and give it a warm and transparent appearance; their rollers lined with felt and Amber stone which polish the cowhide by rubbing the surface which shines naturally. In all this, their hands are precious and they take care of each skin, considering it as a unique material, as a creation to be taken care of, as a precious asset.

Tanning

Skin

Before starting the actual tanning process, the cut skins require special treatment which consists of immersing them in large barrels made with specially treated wood.

These barrels restore the natural state of hydration and also perform the function of removing salt and other impurities present in the skins still in their raw state. During this so-called "calcination" bath, the hairs still present on the skin come off. At this point, the skins removed from the drums are ready for the fleshing and splitting operations, carried out with the help of skilled workers.

These processes eliminate excess meat and fat. The last phase of this preparation for tanning is called "stripping" and consists of a new immersion of the skins in barrels specialized for this process. During this immersion, the still fresh skin is penetrated with acids which eliminate the causes of rot, making it more receptive to the tanning process.

Fattening

After tanning, two new processes begin: dyeing and fattening. These processes are carried out by expert master tanners using specific recipes. The latter provide the correct dosage percentages of liquor and color. These recipes are real secret formulas that characterize the articles of each tannery.

Once the dyeing and supercharging phases have been completed, the “wet” treatment of the leather is complete.

Drying

The "wet" processes described so far end with the drying of the skins themselves. Damp leathers are hung on a heating chain which facilitates this process. Once dry, the hides should be smoothed and softened to make them uniform for subsequent mechanical processing and finishing.
